Lexus RX
With the Lunar New Year holiday falling in February this year rather than January 2023, sales of new imported cars in China fell -40.6% year-on-year this month to just 32,968 units. However, the overall two-month figure, reflecting the real evolution of the market, fell only -2% to 108,442, which is a good performance for imports, which usually have a steeper downward trend. After falling to second place in January, Lexus (-7.8%) is well ahead of the market and returns to its traditional pole position. Mercedes (-49.2%) and BMW (-46.1%) fall even faster than average to complete the podium as they have done throughout 2023. Audi (-32.1%) is slightly stronger in fourth place, behind Toyota (-20.3%), Land Rover (-46.6%) and Volvo (-42.1%).
On the model side, the Lexus ES (+9.3%) overcomes a negative market to post an ultra-dominant result with over 6,000 sales. This is almost 3 times more than Mercedes GLE No. 2 (-21.3%). In third place, the Lexus RX (+974%) makes up for last year’s particularly poor volume. The Mercedes S-Class (-43.8%), Porsche Cayenne (-47.7%) and Toyota Alphard (-52.2%) are falling below the market faster. Also note the BMW 7 Series (+13.3%), Toyota Land Cruiser (+817.6%) and Prado (+83.9%), which showed strong growth. The Lexus RZ ranked 37th, but it had been on sale for several months and sales from previous months had been updated.
Previous month: Import to China. January 2024: Mercedes No. 1, sales up 36%.
A year ago: Import to China. February 2023: Mercedes remains No. 1, Porsche, Toyota stand out, sales up 30.6%.
