South Africa November 2024: VW Polo Vivo upsets Toyota Hilux

VW Polo Vivo sales rose 56.8% year-on-year in November.

The South African new car market in November posted a second strong month in a row, up 8.1% year on year to 48,585 units. This means the annual figure fell -3.5% to 474,469. However, exports continued to fall -28.6% to 30,431 for the month and -23.9% to 283,454 year-to-date. The number of passenger vehicles increased by 20% to 35,101, while the number of light commercial vehicles fell by -16.3% to 10,827.

The eight largest producers were unchanged from last month, all of them showing growth compared to last year. Toyota (+1.8%) is weak, but easily holds the lead with a share of 24.9%. It is ahead of the market of Volkswagen Group (+14.7%) and Suzuki (+37.5%). Chery (+33.6%), GWM (+18.7%) and Hyundai (+16.1%) also shine, while Ford (+5.5%) and Isuzu (+4.2%) are more subdued .

In terms of models, the VW Polo Vivo (+56.8%) comes out on top, knocking out the Toyota Hilux (-12.1%), which has held the top spot uninterrupted since April 2023. However, Hilux remains firmly in the lead since the start of the year. . At the same time, the Polo Vivo rises to second place since the beginning of the year, overtaking the Ford Ranger (+0.6%) and falling to fourth place this month. Toyota Corolla Cross (+50.3%) and Suzuki Swift (+59%) also showed fantastic results and rounded out the top five. The new Mahindra XUV30 climbed three places in October to 22nd position, while the Omoda C5 rockets to the top spot. 30 for the first time in 30th place.
