BYD Qin Plus is China’s best-selling car in the first half of 2024.

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that China’s wholesale sales rose 6.1% year on year in the first half of 2024 to 14,047,000 units. Passenger cars rose 6.3% to 11,979,000, while commercial vehicles climbed 4.9% to 2,068,000. New energy vehicles rose 32% year on year to 4,944,000 (or 35.2% share), including 3,019,000 BEVs (up 11.6%) and 1,922,000 PHEVs (up 85.2%). First-half exports rose 30.5% to 2,793,000, including 2,339,000 passenger vehicles (up 31.5%). The important news is that the market share of domestic passenger car brands has exceeded 60%, which is clearly higher than the 53.1% it had a year ago, as evidenced by the dismal results of most foreign brands during this period, as we will see below.

In the brand rankings, BYD (+18.4%) now establishes itself as the undisputed leader with 1.3 million sales in six months. The gap with No. 2 Volkswagen (-5.6%) is now more than 373,000 units. Toyota (-14%) remains in third place, but is down significantly, in contrast to Geely (+28.1%), which rose two places from a year ago to No. 4. As a result, Honda (-15.3%) and Changan (-17.9%), both in difficult situations, fall to No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. No other member of the Top 12 is in a positive position, with Audi (-1.1%) and Nissan (-1.3%) performing better. Notably, Tesla (-5.4%) drops to No. 12. Below, Chery (+45.3%), Hongqi (+24.4%) and Li Auto (+35.8%) all perform very well, but the winner among them is AITO (+676.8%), which breaks into the top 20 and takes 17th place.

Below, there are a host of domestic brands in outstanding form, starting with Jetour (+122.2%) entering the top 20 at 20th place, Lynk & Co (+53.3%) at 22nd place, TANK (+75.4%) at 26th place, Zeekr (+106.1%) at 27th place, NIO (+60.2%) and Leapmotor (+94.8%) at 29th place. All of these manufacturers exceeded their monthly sales volume at least once during the period. The most popular brand launch in H1 2024 was Qiyuan at 31st place, followed by Xiaomi at 48th place, Fang Cheng Bao at 54th place, iCar at 57th place and Luxeed at 59th place. All foreign manufacturers are in the negative position at the end of the first half of the year, with the exception of Mazda (+14.5%) in 43rd place and Lincoln (+1.5%) in 49th place. For example, Hyundai shares fell by 23.5%, Cadillac fell by 29.5%, Chevrolet fell by 62.7%, Peugeot fell by 10.9%, Land Rover fell by 16.9%, Citroen fell by 36.9%, Skoda fell by 44.3% and Infiniti fell by 69.4%.

The BYD Qin Plus (+20.5%) managed to take the leading position in the model ranking, overtaking the Tesla Model Y (+1.9%) thanks to more stable sales during the period. The Qin Plus even increases its lead over the Model Y to 33,555 sales, which almost guarantees pole position for the year. The BYD Song Plus (+1%) remains in third place, while the BYD Seagull (+571.8%) is still preparing and ranks 4th against 10th for the whole of 2023. It is followed by the Nissan Sylphy (-2.1%) and VW Lavida (-9.4%). The excellent results of the BYD Song Pro (+47.9%), as well as the Yuan Plus (-15.7%) allowed it to take the fifth place among BYD models in the top eight. Just behind the top ten is the VW Passat (+27.7%), a rare positive story for the brand, moving up nine places to 11th place, with the AITO M7 (+1624.2%) moving up to 12th place, the Toyota Front Lander (+48.7%) to 13th place and the BYD Destroyer 05 (+163.6%) to 14th place. The AITO M9 is the best-selling of the recent launches, coming in at 48th place, ahead of the Jetour Traveller at 57th place and the Geely Boyue L at 63rd place.

A year ago: China wholesale sales in the first half of 2023: BYD (+72%) now firmly in the lead, ahead of VW (-5.1%)
