India March 2024: Tata Punch best-seller for the first time

by red

Tata Punch ranks number one in India in March.

New vehicle wholesale sales in India rose 10% year-on-year in March, reaching a record high for the month at 369,381 units. Note that the previous March record was achieved only last year. The first quarter figure rose 11.7% to 1,135,030 sales, the highest first quarter figure ever recorded. Maruti Suzuki (+15%) holds 41.3% stake versus 42.3% this year. Hyundai (+4.7%) regains its 2nd place since the beginning of the year, behind Tata (+13.8%). Mahindra (+12.9%) follows in fourth place, while Toyota (+35.2%) breaks its monthly volume record for the third month in a row. The remaining brands show worse results, with Honda (+5.7%) the only one in the black.

In terms of models, a significant event awaits us: Tata Punch (+61.1%) rises to pole position for the first time in history. This is the second time in the last four months that the No. 1 model is not Maruti Suzuki after the Tata Nexon topped the charts in December last year. Note that Punch’s monthly volume was lower than last month, which was a record for the nameplate. More importantly, Punch now also ranks first year-to-date, overtaking the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, down -5.4% to third place this month. Hyundai Creta (+17.3%) breaks its monthly sales record and moves up to 2nd place overall, up from 7th place last month and 8th place year-to-date. The Mahindra Scorpio (+72.4%) also hits an all-time high, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+64.9%) and Maruti Suzuki DZire (+18.7%) are also in great shape in the remaining top ten. Below, Toyota Innova/Hycross (+22.6%) set a monthly record, surpassing its previous record of 9,368 achieved in January 2017.

Previous month: India February 2024: Toyota and Tata Punch break records, record high February volume.

One year ago: India March 2023: Mahindra posts record monthly market growth of 4.5%.
