In February, GWM was ranked 11th in the New Zealand Brand Index.

Similar to January, new car sales in New Zealand rose 1.5% to 9,663 units. This is a poor result considering February 2023 was down -24% from the previous year. The year-to-date figure was also up 1.5% to 22,295. Passenger cars had a terrible month, -66.7% year-on-year to just 1,091 sales, while SUVs were up 5.2% to 4,842 and light commercial sales rose 14.7% to 3060. Light passenger vehicle (PC+SUV) sales figures hit their lowest level in 11 years in February. Year to date, passenger car sales were down -33.9% to 2,451, SUVs were down -1.6% to 11,557, and light commercial vehicles were down 27.6% to 6,856.

All three leading brands significantly outperformed the market, posting double-digit year-on-year growth. Toyota (+19.8%) leads with a 20.9% share, ahead of Ford (+23.7%) with a 15.2% share and Mitsubishi (+43.6%) with a 10.5% share. Suzuki (-37.5%) is in fourth place, unlike Nissan (+78.5%) and Kia (+6.8%). Volkswagen (+14.8%) also ranks ninth, but Hyundai (-62.6%), Mazda (-8.4%) and Honda (-4.3%) are in the opposite order. Outstanding results for GWM (+845.8%) in 11th place versus 25th for all of 2023.

In the model range, the Ford Ranger (+11.3%) remains in first place with a 9.9% share, ahead of the Toyota Hilux (-18.5%) and RAV4 (+132.3%) on the unchanged podium. The Mitsubishi Triton (+90%) ranks third in the top four pick-up trucks, while the Suzuki Swift (-53.4%) slips five places from last month to 5th place but suffers year-on-year declines . Ford Everest (+98.2%) once again performed well in 6th and 7th place year-to-date, compared to 19th place for all of 2023. The Nissan Navara (+100.9%) doubles its sales over the previous year to land at #7. Kia Sportage (+60.8%) rises again to 11th place, and Tesla Model Y to 13th.
