In 2024, 209,715 new cars found buyers in Portugal, up 5.1% on last year. Peugeot (+4.4%) is the country’s best-selling automaker for the fourth year in a row with a 10.3% share. This allowed Mercedes (+12.7%) to rise to a record 2nd place, while Dacia (+9.5%) also moved up one position compared to last year to take third place. Both manufacturers benefit from weak results from Renault (-6.1%), dropping two places to 4th place, having dominated the Portuguese brand charts for 16 years to 2021. Toyota (+12.8%) and Citroen (+6.3%) were ahead of their competitors. the market is in the rest of the top 10, and Volkswagen (+4.6%) and Tesla (+4.6%) are close to it. Volvo (+36.7%) and Nissan (+25.2%) also shine, with BYD (+593.8%) breaking into the top 20 in 20th place.
In the model segment, Dacia Sandero (+20.8%) displaces Peugeot 2008 (+11.1%), ending the latter’s three-year dominance. Thus, Sandero dominates the entire Iberian Peninsula and also ranks first in Spain. Tesla Model 3 (+65.5%) moved up four spots from last year to take the third step of the podium and take first place overall in May, September and December. Renault Clio (+11.4%) ensures that all models in the top 4 are ahead of the market. The Peugeot 208 (-3.4%) and Renault Captur (-8.3%) disappointed with year-on-year losses, but the Nissan Juke (+138%) rose 22 places to 10th, Citroen C3 (+35. 3%) up five to eighth place, Peugeot 308 (+31.3%) up four to seventh place and Dacia Duster (+24.8%) rose three to ninth place.
