Suzuki made the biggest gains in the Top 14 rankings this month.
The South African new car market was down -0.9% year-on-year in February to 44,749 sales. The year-on-year figure was down -1.7% to 86,964. Note that exports jumped 27.5% to 39,517 and were up 13.8% to 58,797 year-to-date. Toyota (-0.3%) is stable at 25.8% of shares, more than double the share of second position Volkswagen Group (+0.9%). Suzuki (+21.2%) is a very strong third, while Nissan (-13.7%) overtakes Ford (+9.3%) for 4th overall. Chery (+8.9%) repeats its record ranking (9th place), Haval (+7.7%) and Isuzu (+2.1%) are also in the black.
In terms of model, the Toyota Hilux (-7%) easily maintains pole position with a 6.9% share despite disappointing year-on-year losses. Its nemesis Ford Ranger (+21.1%) moves up to second place, while the Toyota Corolla Cross (+16.4%) also moves up one place to third on the podium. It is followed by VW Polo Vivo (+23%) and Isuzu D-Max (-0.4%). The Hyundai Grand i10 (+72.8%), Suzuki Swift (+19%) and Toyota Starlet (+13%) also outperformed the market in the rest of the top 10.
