South Africa March 2024: Nissan NP200 bows out in style (#2)


The Nissan NP200 has been on sale in South Africa for 16 years with minor changes.

The South African new car market fell -11.7% year-on-year to 44,235 units in March, pushing first-quarter volume down -5.3% to 131,199 units. Exports fell -27.1% this month to 24,161 and are down -4.9% year to date to 80,649. Toyota (-17.1%) and VW Group (-15%) are falling even faster than the market. but continue to dominate the producer charts. Suzuki (+16.1%) and Nissan (+32.6%) perform very well in third and fourth place respectively, with Chery (+1.9%) also making up the rest of the top 10. Isuzu (-3.9%) manages to limit the fall, but Renault (-36.8%), GWM (-21.9%), Hyundai (-19.7%) and Ford (-19.5%) fall strongly .

In terms of models, the Toyota Hilux (-20.8%) maintains the lead with a share of around 7%, but this month’s highlight is the 2nd place Nissan NP200 (+90.8%) in failure mode as production was stopped 31 Martha. The Isuzu D-Max (-8.5%) moved up two places from last month to third place, followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross (+11%) and Ford Ranger (-13%). The Nissan Navara (+134.3%), Hyundai Grand i10 (+42%) and Suzuki Swift (+14.8%) also shine in the rest of the top 10. Among recently launched models (<12 months), Toyota Vitz ranks #16, Suzuki Fronx #28 and Suzuki Grand Vitara #37.
