by red

Hyundai Exter is outside the top 20 in its first month of existence.

Falling fuel prices and the first interest rate cut since the pandemic were not enough to push the South African new car market into a positive direction. Indeed, September sales fell a further -4.1% in September to 44,081 units. The annual figure fell -5.8% to 377,835. Passenger vehicles rose 2% to 30,218, while light commercial vehicles fell -17.1% to 10,914. Exports continued to fall at a staggering -38.1% in year-on-year to just 21,964 units. Since the beginning of the year, exports have decreased by -19.7% to 232,199 units.

Toyota (-14.3%) easily remains the country’s best-selling manufacturer with a 24.7% share, despite a significant year-on-year loss. Volkswagen Group (-6.8%) better holds second place, but still lags behind the market. In contrast, Suzuki (+12.2%) continues to impress in third place, ahead of Ford (+0.6%) and Hyundai (+6.6%), both in the green. Chery (+30.2%) and GWM (+13.6%) show the best results in the top ten. Next comes Mahindra (+29.3%), while newcomer Omoda & Jaecoo remains at 1.1%.

The top model ranking is the Toyota Hilux (-9.4%) with a share of 6.7% versus 6.4% this year. The VW Polo Vivo (-10.8%) overtakes the Ford Ranger (-1.3%) to take 2nd place overall, while the Toyota Corolla Cross (-9.5%) and Isuzu D-Max (-2. 9%) round out the top five. At the bottom, Toyota Fortuner (+21.6%), Hyundai Grand i10 (+18.7%), Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+15.4%) and Nissan Magnite (+9%), as well as Suzuki Baleno (+83) are impressive .9%) (+83.9%). +61.9%) and the Fronx (+61.3%) in eighth place last month, the new Toyota Starlet Cross, a clone of the Suzuki Fronx, has dropped to a more reasonable 18th place. In its first month of sales, the Hyundai Exter, imported from India, fell to 8th place. , lands right on #22.
