Taiwan August 2024: Toyota Town Ace signs first pole position in devastated market

by red

Toyota Town Ace is the most popular car in Taiwan in August.

Taiwan’s new car market fell -17% year-on-year in August to 29,403 units, sending the annual figure into negative territory by -1.6% to 307,584. There are several explanations for this sharp decline. August 4 marked the start of the traditional People’s Day, a slow period for new car registrations. In addition, on July 30, the Industrial Development Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced the implementation of a new control system for Chinese components assembled in Taiwan from August 1. This means that a commitment letter on a “localized supply chain cooperation cost ratio” must be submitted. This sent shock waves through Taiwan’s auto industry and negatively affected sales.

Toyota (-16.1%) follows the market and remains ultra-dominant with a 28.2% share. Unaffected by localized components as a pure importer, Mercedes soars 63.9% year-on-year but only achieves a 6.1% share, up from 6% this year. Lexus (-13.5%) drops to 3rd place but resists relatively well. Honda (-31.2%) is hit hard in 4th place, ahead of Hyundai (-17.6%) and the solid – in context – BMW (-7%). Volkswagen (-21.1%) struggles year-on-year but jumps to 7th place and a 4.1% share, up from 13th place and 2.7% since the beginning of the year. CMC (+19%) and Mazda (+0.2%) are the only other Top 10 entrants to show positive dynamics, while Mitsubishi (-27.2%) is in a tough spot and rounds out the Top 10. Also note MG, which has seen a 54.6% decline.

In terms of models, the Toyota Town Ace (+41.4%) takes pole position for the first time thanks to strong sales growth. The traditional leader, the Toyota Corolla Cross (-38.2%), ends the month just 11 units lower. The Toyota RAV4 (-30.4%) is also in a difficult situation, but manages to hold on to third place, a ranking that has also been in place since the beginning of the year. The new Yaris Cross climbed two places in July to 4th place, making it four Toyotas in the top four, as it did a year ago in August 2023. The CMC Veryca (-22.4%) climbed three places last month to complete the top five, ahead of the Tesla Model Y (+36.3%), which climbed 22 places to 6th place.
