Great Wall has developed fireproof batteries
07/02/2021
Chinese auto giant Great Wall announced a promising development for electric vehicles. On June 29, as part of the Technology Festival in China, the company introduced a new battery, Dayu Battery, which is designed to solve the problem of fire safety of batteries.
Although cases of electric vehicle fires are isolated and, in terms of a vehicle unit, occur much less frequently than in the case of vehicles with internal combustion engines, they are much more difficult to localize and extinguish. This is due to the chemical composition of the batteries, which becomes thermally uncontrollable in the event of a fire.
Great Wall’s vice president for R&D explained that the new battery is based on high-capacity nickel cells and has the function of rapid cooling of the poles and a directed detonation and fire extinguishing system. It is reported that the technology completely eliminates explosions and battery detonation.
Great Wall expects that the new battery will appear on the group’s electric vehicles as early as 2022. In addition, the company made the technology open to other automakers.
