A license plate believed to be the world’s most expensive sold for AED 55 million ($15 million) at auction over the weekend. The plate contains one letter and one number: “P 7”.

Emirates auction that sold the license plate in Dubai on Saturday. stated that this is a new record. The company said proceeds will go to a food relief charity led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the ruler of Dubai. The buyer of the license plate wished to remain anonymous.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most expensive license plate sold before last weekend’s auction was a plate that read “1.” This “number” was bought for 52.2 million dirhams (about $14.2 million) by Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khoury from the United Arab Emirates in 2008, also during an auction organized by Emirates Auction.

Specialty license plates are in demand in different parts of the world. For example, in Hong Kong, a license plate with a single letter “R” sold for HK$25.5 million, or about $3.2 million, in February. In 2021, someone paid $24.5 million for a California “MM” license plate that also contained a non-fungible token, making it valuable among cryptocurrency proponents.
