The €9 monthly ticket, which allowed travel across the country on regional trains, metro, trams and buses, prevented the emission of 1.8 million tonnes of CO2. Because passengers are using their cars less, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) said.
About 52 million tickets have been sold since the experiment began in June. According to a survey of 78,000 people, one in ten consumers were giving up at least one of their daily car trips. The reduction in carbon emissions from such actions is said to be equivalent to powering around 350,000 homes for an entire year.
The experiment with a single ticket for 9 euros ended on August 31. Despite concerns about the program’s funding and the strain on the transport network, some German politicians want the subsidy to be extended in some form.
